TAKING A STAND AGAINST ANTI-SEMITISM

The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee takes a firm stand against anti-Semitism in all of its forms, as it is manifested domestically and overseas.

We draw a red line and do not allow for compromise when it comes to hatred of Jews. There are not nuances to anti-Semitism and The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee considers it a virulent ill. Furthermore, we feel a strong sense of urgency in combating this ever-increasing threat.

We are all against Anti-semitism. That is a given. But Israel is not Judaism, and Zionism is not Judaism. One can criticize Israel without being Anti-semitic. I am a yeshiva student in my younger days, and I have been a zionist my whole life. But it is a fact that Israel has problems, and has done many problematic actions. One just published in the New York times (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/23/opinion/israel-dont-level-my-village.html?ref=opinion&_r=0) is so problematic that supporting the current government may be more of a sin than a blessing. I am an American. I am a Jew. I am concerned for the future of Israel. But my support is weakening in the face of domestic (and even international) errors that make support difficult to continue. Please do not equate anti-semitism with anti-zionism. If France (a strongly cathoic country) did something wrong and we criticized it, we would not be called anti-catholic. In the same way, it is going to be a self-defeating strategy to ignore the problems of Israel and refer to any criticism of Israel as “Anti-Semitic.”
