Sand, Song, and Schmooze

havdalah 4-3-13
Why is this Saturday night different from all other Saturday nights? Well, for one, it’s the first Saturday since Passover on which chametz (leavened products) will be abundant. Two, your Federation is bringing you a unique, fun-filled, free family event called Sand, Song, and Schmooze: Havdalah on the Beach

After a several year hiatus on PJ Library programming, we have gathered a committee to help us bring fun, family-friendly events that provide what the community is looking for. Sponsored by The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-ManateeThe PJ Library of Sarasota-Manatee and the Karp Family Foundation, this event will bring the entire community together under the beautiful Sarasota sunset where we can forget about the things that may divide us and just be Jews. You and your kids will meet other Jews that you may not know even existed in our little Sarasota community, and your kids can never have enough Jewish friends to hang out with (though the event is open to everyone!).

At 6:00 PM, we will be meeting at the pavilion on Siesta Key Beach by the playground and picnic area. You’ll get the chance to make up for a week without chametz by noshing on delicious snacks and desserts and making cookie “drums” and pretzel “drumsticks” with your kids. Kids (and adults, too!) will be able to make percussion instruments to play along with the drum circle, which will begin at 7:00. We will do a short, musical Havdalah (a beautiful ceremony marking the end of Shabbat and the beginning of a new week) and then a great big jam session! Amber Ikeman, a local singer, songwriter and Jewish song leader will be leading the Havdalah and sing-along, and we have also brought several great drummers, even a few from the famous Siesta Sunday night drum circle, to get our toes tapping in the sand. Get ready to sing, dance, and maybe even do a little horah if the mood strikes.

We look forward to seeing you there!
