Iran and the Nuclear Threat:

22 Feb

It no secret that Iran has repeatedly stated they would like nothing more than for the Jews and Israel, or as they refer to it, “The Zionist-regime” to be wiped off the map; sadly enough, recent developments in Iran’s nuclear project are suggesting that such an outcome is a very real and dangerous possibility unless something is done to prevent it!

Right now, your Federation wants to know what you think about the situation!

Please look for action steps in how to address this pressing concern in the next coming days on the Federations blog.

I wrote th following to the Sarasota Herald Tribune, who printed it on 2/19/2012″\:

The Iranians continue to play rope-a-dope with the U.S. and the world. First, they rattle sabres, threatening Israel and the U.S. with destruction (which they cannot yet carry out). They threaten closure of the Strait of Hormuz, triggering our terror of higher gas prices.
Then they offer the olive branch of negotiations, to stall for a few months before they need to utter the next round of threats. All the while, they openly develop the weapons that will make them truly dangerous and make a second holocaust possible.

And the U.S. policy? Admit military impotence (even shrink our own forces), worry about offending Iran, and put off serious sanctions until we can be sure they won’t affect oil prices. And warn Israel against taking action to defend itself. “Leave it to us,” the U.S. says.

I don’t know what Israel should do about Iran. But it seems obvious what America should do. America should say to Israel and the world that we will stand by our ally Israel with our full support in whatever actions its government decides are necessary to meet the Iranian threat.

We should do this because Israel is the frontline target of the threat, has shown itself to be judicious and cautious in making such security decisions in the past, is our only ally in the region; is the only stable, democratic state in the region, and is the only one willing to live in peace if given the chance.

If we are to be totally honest and realistic on this issue. There seems to be no way that Iran s going to reverse the position it has taken and the course it has put itself on. Israel has no choice but to act first and act in the interest of self preservation .
